The 2020 New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championships will be held from January 18 to 26 at the Langley Curling Centre and the George Preston Recreation Centre in Langley, British Columbia. The World Junior Curling Championships are an annual curling bonspiel featuring the world’s best curlers who are 21 years old or younger.
The Championships, due to start tomorrow at the at the Crystal Ice Arena and conclude on February 22, come back to the country after last being hosted in Sochi in 2013 where the hosts made both finals against Scotland, winning the women’s title and finishing runners-up in the men’s. The women’s defending champions are the hosts, skipped by Vlada Rumiantseva, who defeated Canada in last year’s final in Liverpool in Nova Scotia and will look to retain their title.
Canada, though, are always expected to make finals and won both titles in 2015 and 2018, but also have two new teams this year. Switzerland made the men’s final last year which they lost to Canada and will look to build on that with a gold medal for the first time since 2014 and have not made a women’s final since 2005. Despite incredible form in the senior set up, Sweden have only won two titles out of 20 in the past 10 years.
Scotland have not won a women’s title since 2012 but lifted the men’s title in 2013 and 2016, making the final four every year since 2011.
Some of the sports greats who won a World Junior title include Swedish duo Anna Hasselborg and Oskar Eriksson, the 2019 world mixed doubles champions; Scotland’s Eve Muirhead; as well as one of Europe’s greatest ever curlers, Peja Lindholm. The men’s teams for the Championships will be Canada, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland and United States.
The women’s teams will be Canada, Denmark, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Latvia, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland. The event is being held as part of the legacy from last year’s Winter Universiade, now renamed the Winter University Games, which was also hosted in the city. Two Manitoba curling teams had their official send off Sunday before making their way to Russia to represent Team Canada in the world junior curling championships.
Skips Mackenzie Zacharias, Jacques Gauthier and their rinks are heading overseas to play in the international competition held in the city of Krasnoyarsk starting Saturday. The local curling community rallied around the two Manitoba teams at the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club on Sunday.
The hall was decked out in red and white. Curling played on television in the background as coaches and athletes from the women’s and men’s teams thanked their supporters — and roasted their teammates in front of family and friends. Wearing matching dresses and heels, and suits and ties, respectively, the two teams said goodbye to their supporters back home.
They will be facing a new crowd while surrounded by different sights and sounds in a foreign country.National champions were crowned Saturday as the 2020 USA Junior Curling Championships wrapped up at the Eau Claire Curling Club. The men’s final was a match-up between Team Violette, the three-time defending junior national champions, and Team Tuma.
In the final stone in the 10th end, Luc Violette secures the clinching point for team Violette as they defeat Team Tuma 6-4 for their fourth straight junior national championship. We are really proud of the way we played this week,” said Violette. “So our goal here was to come here and go undefeated and get better with every game and then move on and take the world title in Russia this year.”
The women’s final between Team Strouse and Team Farrell came down to the final stone in the 11th and extra end. With the match tied, Delaney Strouse had the perfect throw into the center circle to give the young ladies, including UW-Eau Claire’s Rebecca Rodgers the national title. It’s really exciting we are a pretty young team, so we got a full year together, and then a lot of us have another year after that,” said Strouse. “Hopefully we can do a consecutive thing and that would be great.
